Washington, D.C. – Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has widened her lead over former President Donald Trump in the race for the U.S. presidency, following their September 10 debate. Polls conducted after the debate show Harris with a significant advantage as the November 5 election approaches.

Harris, widely seen as the winner of the debate, now holds a 47% to 42% lead over Trump, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between September 11 and 19. This marks an increase in support for Harris, who had been ahead by a smaller margin prior to the debate.

In a separate Economist/YouGov poll, Harris is leading by four percentage points among registered voters, the largest lead recorded by any candidate in that poll for nearly a year. Before the debate, Harris had a two-point lead in the same poll.

Polling aggregator Real Clear Politics also reflects the growing gap between the two candidates, giving Harris a 49.3% to 47.3% advantage as of September 19, up from a 1.4-point lead on September 10. Meanwhile, FiveThirtyEight reports that Harris now leads Trump by three points, up from a two-point margin before the debate.

The debate, broadcast by ABC News, attracted over 67 million viewers, surpassing the 51 million who watched Trump's June debate against then-President Joe Biden.

Biden, who performed poorly in his previous debate against Trump, withdrew from the race in July, leaving Harris to take over as the Democratic nominee. Polls suggest that Harris’ strong debate performance has solidified her position in the race as the election nears.

With just weeks remaining, the contest between Harris and Trump is expected to intensify as both candidates continue their campaigns in key battleground states.
