No charges will be filed against former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Jason Kelce following an altercation outside Penn State University's Beaver Stadium last month. The incident, which was captured on social media, seemed to show Kelce smashing a fan's cellphone after the fan used a slur against his younger brother, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The altercation occurred on November 2, during the Penn State-Ohio State game, as Kelce was leaving the stadium. In videos verified by NBC News, Kelce is seen holding a case of beer and surrounded by fans when a man is heard shouting a homophobic slur directed at Travis Kelce, referencing his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Kelce then appears to grab the man’s phone and smash it to the ground.
A subsequent video shows the man chasing after Kelce and asking for his phone, with Kelce repeating the slur back to him.
Penn State University spokesperson Jacqueline Sheader confirmed that the school’s police department closed the case, noting that the individual involved has not been identified and no formal complaint about property damage was filed.
Kelce publicly apologized for the incident on ESPN's "Monday Night Countdown," expressing regret over his actions. "I’m not proud of it. I chose to greet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s productive," he said.
Kelce, who retired from professional football at the end of last season, has since joined ESPN as a commentator. The network declined to comment on the incident.
