In the wake of Sheikh Hasina’s dramatic exit from Bangladesh amid violent protests, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has addressed speculation about her potential return. Joy, who resides in the United States, confirmed in an interview with the Times of India that Hasina, the former Prime Minister, will return to Bangladesh once the newly appointed caretaker government decides to hold elections.

The interim Cabinet, consisting primarily of civil society members, includes two leaders of the recent student protests.

Hasina fled to India earlier this week following intense demonstrations that led to her resignation. The caretaker government, now led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was formally inaugurated on Thursday by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Yunus’s immediate responsibilities include restoring stability and preparing for upcoming elections.

Joy elaborated on the situation, stating, “For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election.” However, he did not clarify whether Hasina would return as a retired or active politician. Joy also expressed concern for the safety of Awami League members, who have been targeted during the unrest. He hinted that Hasina might take a more prominent role upon her return, asserting, “She will definitely return to Bangladesh once democracy is restored.”

In the interim, Yunus faces significant challenges. His appointment marks a pivotal moment for Bangladesh as he aims to navigate the country back to peace and ensure fair electoral processes. The new interim Cabinet, sworn in with Yunus at the helm, is composed mostly of civil society figures and includes two leaders from the recent student protests that contributed to Hasina’s removal. Notably absent from the ceremony were representatives from Hasina’s Awami League party, underscoring the current political divide.

As the nation awaits further developments, the question of Sheikh Hasina's return continues to capture public and political interest.
