Pete Hegseth and Tulsi Gabbard, two of President-elect Donald Trump's most contentious nominees, met with U.S. senators on Monday in hopes of securing the support needed for their confirmation. However, it remains uncertain whether they will receive the near-unanimous Republican backing required.
Hegseth, nominated for Secretary of Defense, held a second meeting with Senator Joni Ernst, a key figure in his bid for confirmation. Ernst, a combat veteran, appeared open to supporting Hegseth after he committed to completing a Pentagon audit and addressing issues surrounding sexual assault within the military. Hegseth has faced allegations of misconduct, including sexual assault, which he denies.

Despite the challenges, Trump continues to back Hegseth, expressing confidence in his eventual confirmation.
Gabbard, Trump's pick for Director of National Intelligence, also met with senators on Monday. Her nomination has sparked controversy, particularly following her 2017 visit to Syria, which has come under renewed scrutiny after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s recent fall. Gabbard, who has been critical of U.S. foreign intervention and is seen as less confrontational toward Russia, faces questions about her qualifications and past statements regarding President Trump.
Senator Mike Rounds expressed cautious optimism for Gabbard, noting there may be a path forward if she addresses concerns about her knowledge of the intelligence community and her past remarks.
Both nominees are navigating a divided Senate, with Trump’s slim Republican majority leaving little room for error in securing confirmation.
