The 2024 CrossFit Games were marred by tragedy on August 8, when Serbian athlete Lazar Dukic went missing during a swim event in Marine Creek Lake, Texas. Dukic’s body was discovered an hour after his disappearance, following an extensive search by the Fort Worth Fire Department.

Dukic, who was participating in a demanding 3.5-mile run and 800-meter swim, was seen struggling in the water on a live stream posted to social media. His identity was confirmed by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office, though the cause of death remains unverified. The CrossFit Games had to halt the day’s activities, with the continuation of the event, scheduled until August 11, yet to be confirmed.


What Happened?

The Fort Worth Fire Department responded to a drowning complaint and located Dukic’s body after an hour-long search. CrossFit Games organizers announced his death during the event but provided no further details. CrossFit CEO Don Faul expressed deep sorrow, stating, “CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of one of our athletes in the swim portion of our event this morning. We are working very closely with the authorities with the follow-up investigation.”


About Lazar Dukic

At 28 years old, Dukic had achieved notable success in the CrossFit community. He qualified for the CrossFit Games annually from 2021, securing ninth place in 2021 and 2023, and eighth in 2022. Dukic initially turned down the opportunity to compete as Serbia’s national champion in 2019, making his debut two years later. Before CrossFit, he excelled in water polo, winning six national championships for Serbia.


Dukic's journey into CrossFit began during a trip to the United States, where he was introduced to the sport by his roommate. Known for his rigorous training and dedication, Dukic was a respected figure in the CrossFit community, often sharing his insights and motivational advice on social media.


Public Reaction and Controversy

Dukic’s death has ignited significant controversy on social media. Many have criticized the safety measures in place for the event, with some calling for a review of open water swimming practices in competitions. Reactions ranged from expressions of sorrow and tributes to calls for accountability.


CrossFit competitor Bastin Fritz honored Dukic’s legacy, stating on Instagram, “May your brave spirit and passion for the sport live on forever in our hearts.” In contrast, social media users voiced concerns over the event's safety protocols and the handling of the situation, with some questioning the organizers' commitment to athlete welfare.

As the CrossFit community grapples with this tragedy, the investigation continues, and the future of the ongoing games remains uncertain.
